HOW IT WORKS

How it works

☀️

Panels create DC power

Solar panels take the power of the sun and turn it into DC power for you.

🔌

Inverters make it usable

Inverters turn the DC power from your panels into AC power that you can use to run all of your appliances.

🔋

Batteries store the excess

Batteries store the excess power your panels produce during the day to power your home through the evening.

SOLAR ENERGY FLOW

How energy moves through your home

Throughout the day, your ClearSky Solar system intelligently routes power between your solar panels, battery, home and the grid — so you always use the cleanest, cheapest energy available.

Solar energy flow diagram showing morning off-peak, generating excess solar, partially offset usage and night/peak times.

Morning Off-Peak

Solar ramps up to power the home and start topping up the battery.

Generating Excess Solar

Panels produce more than the home needs — the battery charges and excess is exported to the grid.

Partially Offset Usage

Solar covers part of the home's load, with the rest drawn from the grid.

Night / Peak Times

Solar stops, the battery powers the home, and the grid fills any remaining gap.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

All collapsed by default but expandable.

Most major NZ banks (ANZ, ASB, Westpac, BNZ) offer Green Home Loan top-ups allowing you to borrow up to $50,000–$80,000 at 0% to 1% interest over 3 to 5 years. In most cases, your monthly power savings cover the loan repayments, making the system cash-flow positive from day one.

When your system generates more energy than your home consumes, the excess is sent back to the grid. NZ power retailers currently pay buy-back rates between $0.12 and $0.17+ per kWh. We help you select retailer plans to maximize your return.

Yes. You require an import/export (two-way) smart meter to track both energy drawn from and fed back into the grid. If your home doesn't have one, your electricity retailer will upgrade it after installation.

Rooftop solar installations generally do not require local council consent unless your home is a heritage building. However, every grid-connected system requires approval from your regional lines company (e.g., Vector, Powerco). We manage all lines approvals and sign-offs for you as part of our turn-key service.

Physical installation on your roof and electrical wiring typically takes 1 to 2 days. Your power will only be interrupted for a short window (usually 2 to 4 hours) when connecting the inverter and main board.

Yes. Solar panels generate power from sunlight radiation, not ambient heat, so they continue producing electricity during cloudy or overcast conditions. While North-facing roofs give maximum peak yield, East and West roof alignments capture strong morning and late afternoon energy.

Solar panels require minimal maintenance. New Zealand's regular rainfall naturally cleans the anti-reflective glass surface. We recommend a visual inspection and an annual hose-down if dust or pollen builds up.

Standard solar systems automatically shut down during grid outages for safety reasons (anti-islanding). If you add an EPS-capable battery storage system, your home instantly switches to back-up power during an outage to keep essential appliances running.
